Swimming – Lessons

Day 1 – [1/10/2004]
Instructor – Tiger
. Check out our capabilities by asking us swim for a short distance (half lap). I managed to churn up the whole pool with my thrashing :).
. Grab kickboard with hands and learn to kick legs properly.
. Grab floating handlebars with hands and learn to kick legs properly and use one hand at a time to thrust forward.

Thank God, we were not asked to put our head under water 🙂

Day 2 – [1/17/2004]
Instructor – Seth
. Grab kickboard and swim (kick) all the way till the end of the pool !!! (freaked me out)
. Grab kickboard and swim (kick and push with one hand alternatively) all the way till the end of the pool.
. Throw away kickboard, put your head under the water and swim half a lap. (Drank half the pool during this exercise. I tell you, chlorinated water makes you pretty nauseous)
. Swim (kick, push with hands, head under water – AKA real swimming) the whole length of the pool.
. Backstroke – This was real hard for me. I could not relax enough to believe that you could float in the water on your back.
. Scissor Kick – Grab kickboard, put it under your head and grab it with your arm as if though you are holding a violin. Lay on your side in water and kick your legs as in a scissor action. Again, was pretty difficult for me to lay on my side. Kept slipping onto stomach or back.

It was a pretty intense second class. I thought that the instructor was pushing us too far, too soon. Have to work on my kick. I am bending my knees, keeping my fingers apart and thrashing wildly. The key is to move your whole leg. Will keep practising in the pool at home.

6 miles = 9.656064 kilometers

30 days to go for the Great Aloha Run and I am 2.15 miles short of the goal. I am planning on increasing 0.25 miles every day, that will take me to 8.15 miles in ~9 days. I should confess that I take a couple of breaks (walking instead of running) in the middle. I guess, if I roughly calculated my running distance, it would come up to ~5.8 miles. I believe running is all about self control. I realized that if I could persuade my mind, I can actually run longer. But the mind is such a devil :). It constantly keeps nagging “You are out of breath, your legs cannot carry you further, you’r pushing the limit, you are going to collapse”. If you can tell it to shut the hell up, you are golden :).

Swimming-Japanese Lessons

I live in the wonderful state of Hawaii and I can’t swim!! My friends have been having a ball about this for sometime. I decided to rectify this by learning to swim. So I call up the local YMCA and find out that they have swimming lessons for adults [me] :). Lessons start on Jan. 10. If there are no postings after that date, you know what happened :).

On the same note, I have always been fascinated with Japanese culture and language. I like the way the Samurai masters speak in the movies. Such authority and command. Well, I was in the local library the other day and came upon a brochure for the local community school. $40 for an introductory course to speaking Japanese!!! Classes start on the 26th of Jan. I hope after the course, I can enjoy my anime‘ in their original glory.

It is amazing how many resources (and not expensive either) one can find if you only know where to look.

5 Miles [Not 5K :)]

For those still following my preparation for the “Great Aloha Run” [8.15 miles], I am up to 5 miles now. I should admit that I don’t run that distance in a stretch. I walk for a couple hundred meters in the middle :). I am hoping to gradually increase this distance and make it for the D-day. Any suggestions or links for helping with the preparation? Not to boast, but I did loose a couple of inches around the waist :).

I made it..

I forgot to post it yesterday, but I finally made it across my 1.5 mile barrier :). Yesterday night [or to be precise today morning] at ~1:30AM I had a strange urge to run. And run I did like Forest Gump ;). I was able to jog for 2 miles without a rest!! I don’t know if it was the cool night or the empty beach that did it. I hope I will be able to finish a real marathon someday.

It's been a while

Let’s blame it on running :). You see, I try to run regularly. I have improved from nothing to ~1.5 miles now. And I found that everyday I run, I am more consious of my health [I guess because you realize how painful it is to loose those extra inches 😉 ], I watch what I eat and I even try to clean up my room (!!!). So for the last week or so I haven’t been running. I have been putting it off by saying.. there is always tomorrow. I finally got my lazy a$%# off the couch and went running today. So here I am, your ever faithful :).

Well..a lot has happened in the last week. The Cubs have turned from heros to loosers. If any of you watched the 7th game, I pity you :). I didn’t even have the heart to watch the game. I was too nervous. And then there was the whole fiasco in the 6th game with the fan who tried to catch a ball as a sovenier. I feel so sorry for that guy. It is amazing how many details of this personal life have been released into the public. He should seriously consider leaving the city :).

What a day, What a game, What an election

If anyone watched the Cubs vs. Marlins game today, you will understand what I mean :). I was on a company wide conference call and watching the game at the same time. I couldn’t control my emotions when Sammy hit a homer, and made the score even in the 8th inning, I jumped up with joy. The CEO and VP were like “Huh.. and we hired this guy!!” :). But all that effort didn’t help us. In the end, it was a Marlins victory. And across the country, an actor becomes the new Governor of California. Where is this country going to? Hope Clark will make it out in the 2004 presidential election. Looks like the one with the biggest war chest wins elections nowadays rather than people with genuine public interest. But I am an optimist :). As they say, it ain’t over till the fat lady sings [or something to that effect].

THE CUBS MADE IT

Yeah baby.. The Cubs are in the playoffs. I wish I was in Chicago to celebrate this event. For the last 3 years that I was in Chicago, each of the sports team [Cubs | Bulls | Bears] showed promise at the beginning of the season and then fizzled away!! This is one of the most exciting sporting event that I have seen in my life. I was glued to the TV all the time. Especially in the 8th inning when Baker decided to bench Kerry. I was like..what the hell is this guy doing. But I guess he knew what to do. Thats why he is making the BIG $$$$$$ and I am slaving away in Hawaii. Not that I am complaining. THE CUBS RULE :).
