OverHeard

Overheard : On Reacting

I am so surprised that I haven’t heard this phrase till now. I guess I did, but didn’t pay attention :). Over heard this in a talk by a 6th grader on things he learnt from saints.

Respond and don’t react

For most of our interactions in this world, we are quick to react. But instead if we paused and responded to the situation, the world would be a better place.

Overheard : Putting into practice

Simple but powerful quote by Xun Kuang, known as Xunzi (a Chinese Confucian philosopher of the 3rd century BC)

Not having heard something is not as good as having heard it; having heard it is not as good as having seen it; having seen it is not as good as knowing it; knowing it is not as good as putting it into practice.

Overheard : Market share and Profitability

Herb Kelleher‘s, the iconic co-founder and long time CEO of Southwest Airlines, thoughts on profitability. He shared this with Guy Raz on his “How I built this” podcast.

If we have 4% of the market and are being profitable, that is better than having 90% of the market and being unprofitable.

Herb passed away on Jan 3, 2019. RIP Herb.

Overheard : BODMAS

Trying to sharpen my programming skills :). Just heard about BODMAS and mind blown about the simplicity of the acronym.

Essentially BODMAS is a simple way to remember the order a programming language (that follows this standard) processes operators in a statement.

BODMAS
Bracket, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction

Overheard : Call to action

I don’t even recall where I heard this :)..  but it stuck with me for me to write it down

For somebody to do something.. three things much happen at once. The person must want do do it, they must be able to and they must be prompted to do it.

A trigger – the prompt for the action – is effective only when the person is highly motivated, or the task is very easy. If the task is hard, people end up frustrated; if they’re not motivated, they get annoyed.

Overheard : Paradoxical Commandments

My sister shared this awesome “thought” by Dr. Kent M. Keith.

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.
