A conversation about the UK cleared up something I'd always fudged:

  • England is a country
  • Great Britain is the island holding England, Scotland, and Wales
  • The United Kingdom is the sovereign state — Great Britain plus Northern Ireland.
  • The Commonwealth is a different animal entirely, a voluntary club of 56 mostly-independent nations, most once part of the British Empire, with no shared government or laws between them.
