# Overheard : England, Britain, and the UK Aren't the Same Thing

A conversation about the UK cleared up something I'd always fudged: 

- **England** is a country
- **Great Britain** is the island holding England, Scotland, and Wales
- The **United Kingdom** is the sovereign state — Great Britain plus Northern Ireland.
- The **Commonwealth** is a different animal entirely, a voluntary club of 56 mostly-independent nations, most once part of the British Empire, with no shared government or laws between them.
